I am a treasure hunter, a coin flipping trader. Especially if there is a dollar to be made or a freebie to be had I’m interested. I have collected random things since I can remember and figured out early that unlike some collectors who will search every single website, garage sale and Op-shop looking for those special edition granny undies they need to complete their collection, I collect for the reward not the actual treasure itself.
Years ago when I was young I discovered the pirates chest of treasures, the roadside collection. I have driven for hours looking for the perfect items to resell or fulfill a want or desire in my life. I don’t expect much for the items I sell it is only another side hustle to give me extra spending money from time to time.
You would think picking would be easy but let me give you the breakdown of a pickers life.
Firstly you have to be careful not to injur yourself or others property, have the ability to lift/move said item onto your vehicle/trailer, be confident it will sell quickly, leave the pick up site clean and beat all the other mongrel roadside pickers to the good gear.
When out in the battle field you see pickers getting just furniture or just white goods. Then you come across the fast moving insane pickers like me who hunt quickly, stopping irregularly & jump out of their vehicles hunting the piles like vultures looking for any scrap of meat they can find. I wave to you and say Gday mate but as I jump back in my car and beat you to the next pile I laugh and say out loud “Beat ya sicker haha”
I would consider it an addiction much like gold hunting for example when you hit the areas that are doing roadside pick up there is almost a nervousness in the air which doesn’t disappear until you have grabbed your first item that is sure to be a winner.
You come across areas that follow all the rules like cutting cords on electrical items, when picking these areas we look up at the houses as if they are our sworn enemy and we need to take something electrical just to prove we pickers don’t care and we will pick regardless.
There are many more aspects to picking, too many to list here so I will leave you here. If you are a picker please show respect and leave the site as you found it, neatly piled. If you are putting goods out because you can’t be bothered selling or don’t know their worth please put the items out nicely, we may be on selling your gear but people who otherwise can’t afford new items are getting bargains through us pickers.
We pickers are the unsung heroes of the bargain hunting world, fighting the elements to bring you goods at a cheap price.
